Makeup Design for The Seagull by Anton Chekov

For my final project for my Theatre History class, I chose to design makeup charts for three characters based off of three Neo futurist paintings: Nina, Konstantin, and Arkadina. I chose the paintings based on each character and their mannerisms; the dreaming, future focused Nina has a swirl of colors concentrated by her eyes, swirling blues primarily by Konstantin’s head represent his depression, and sharp angles, bold colors, and harsh lines represent the critical Arkadina. The paintings that inspired these looks are Umberto Boccioni’s “Elasticity” (1912), Tullio Crali’s “Engine in Breakdown” (1931), and Crali’s “Structures Portuaires (Nantes)” (1954).
